Partition of Bengal

Partition of Bengal
On 30 December 1898, lord Curzon took over as the new Viceroy of India. The partition of Bengal came into effect on 16 October 1905, through a Royal Proclamation, reducing the old province of Bengal in size by creating a new province of East Bengal, which later on become East Pakistan and present day Bangladesh. The government explained that is was done to stimulate growth of underdeveloped eastern region of the Bengal. But, actually, the main objective was to 'Divide and Rule' the most awakened region of the country at that time. To distroy the political influence of the "english educated" class among whom the Bengali intelligentsia were the most prominent. Many movements were started by the Bangalis freedom fighters which was eventually spreading to other parts of the country. But with the partition of the Bengal, the communal gulf between Hindus and Muslims was successfully placed by the British. The Indian National Congress without making any big condemnation, just restricted themselves to very submissive and unanimous condemnation of the partion of the country.
